Sheku Kanneh-Mason has taken the world by storm since winning BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2016. His performances at the BAFTAs, the BBC Proms, the Royal Variety Performance, and the Royal Wedding have launched him to stardom, and his debut album reached number 18 in the Official UK Album Charts, and Number 1 in the Classical Chart.
As an ambassador for London Music Masters, Sheku has visited LMM schools on several occasions to inspire the young cellists on the LMM programme. In June he returned to Prior Weston Primary School, and performed alongside the Year 2 cellists for the whole school. Sheku then took part in a Q&A with the school, and spoke to the Evening Standard about how impressed he was by how the young musicians responded to the music. “It’s really special to see how they respond to it in a natural way. What stood out for me is that they were so curious, asking ‘how can I make the sound?’ and ‘what different sounds can I make?’ It’s questions like that, that show they are really interested.”
The Year 2s Cellists spoke about their enjoyment of the day. Millie, 7, said “I really enjoy playing the cello, and it was great to see Sheku!” Jasper, 7, said “It was great playing all my favourite pieces!” Alfred, 7, added”I enjoyed playing with Sheku!”
