Rob at the BBC Proms: Blog 1

I love the Proms! I love the history, I love that you can get cheap tickets to every show, I love that whether you are sitting or standing you are guaranteed a really thrilling experience. The classical music world descends on London for an indulgence of sound which lasts the whole summer – what a treat!
Last year was very special for London Music Masters because we took part in our first ever BBC Prom. 30 of our students aged nine and ten 10 from Ashmole and Jessop Primary Schools composed and performed a new addition to Elgar’s Enigma Variations. The preparation and build-up was very intense and the day itself was wonderful with the students giving two perfect performances to the packed hall. For me it was a nerve-free experience. I had total confidence in our young people and the work they had put in. This year it is a little different as I am in the driving seat – and feeling much more nervous than the children were!
Tonight and across the season I will be joining Katie Derham, Suzy Klein, Greg Beardsell and Kathryn Knight to discuss the context and background to the pieces being performed. This evening we are live on BBC 2 at the First Night of the Proms, and it is great to be kicking off with a substantial new work from Canadian composer and pianist Zosha Di Castri. Over the next few weeks I will be giving you a behind-the-scenes taste of the Proms via this blog so watch this space!
